The Electric Department is supported by a superintendent, eight journeyman linemen, and an electrician. Crews are responsible for updating and maintaining the Pierre power system consisting of four (4) 115 kV substations, 7.75 miles of 115 kV overhead transmission, over 80 miles of 12.47 kV underground distribution, approximately 6,500 electric meters, 2,900 street lights, and numerous traffic signals throughout the community.  Electricity for the system is purchased from Western Area Power Administration and Missouri River Energy Services.

Pierre Municipal Electric is owned and operated by the citizens of the community.  Local ownership and control allows citizens a voice in how their system is improved and in how their electric rates are set.

Report Power Outages
To report a power outage between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., please call 605-773-7407. To report an outage after hours, please call 605-773-7410.

Call Before You Dig

Make your locate requests by simply calling 811 (in-state) and (800) 781-7474 outside of South Dakota. Locate requests are accepted 24/7.

Use South Dakota One Call to locate underground utilities before you dig. Excavators planning to dig, drill or trench should make the required locate request to South Dakota One Call two working days before the planned work. Homeowners and landowners planning their own excavation activities are required to notify South Dakota One Call as well.  The One Call service is free.

The South Dakota One Call system provides for communication between excavators and underground facility operators so buried utilities can be marked in advance of any digging. Following the One Call procedure works to reduce damages to underground infrastructure, helps to ensure public and worker safety, and protects the integrity of utility services.
